Preface:

The following is a record of local media reports of incidents of violence against women in the Iraqi Kurdistan Region and some areas which are not under the jurisdiction of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), such as Kirkuk, Khanaqeen and Mosul, between May and December 2008. It includes honour crimes, suspected murders as well as suicide involving self-immolation.
Field researchers and women’s rights groups suggest that, the issue of honour often lies behind many female suicides in Kurdistan. Women are put under pressure and pushed by their families, mainly male members, to commit suicide as a way of purifying family honour and also to conceal the practise from the authorities. Since the reform of the Iraqi Penal Code initiated by the Iraqi Kurdish authorities, researchers claim that suicide among women has increased in Iraqi Kurdistan. Most of the women who were registered as having committed suicide, died by fire and in some cases the death is registered as death following a “fire or/and accidental incident”. This has aroused suspicion about such incidents, which always involve women. Frequently, women are burned in incidents involving kerosene cookers and heaters, such as Paramiz and Soba (appliances with poor or no safety features).
As a way to respect the reporting style, KWRW has translated the reports with no change or very light editorial amendments. Also, KWRW has not been able to check the accuracy of these reports nor has followed up the cases to ensure that due procedures have been implemented. In addition to dozens of women’s organizations and civil rights groups, there are now three government units, established in the summer of 2007, providing support to victims of honour-based as well as domestic violence and monitoring such crimes.
Some of the news reports are duplicated by different newspapers and websites. When aware of such duplication, KWRW has combined the news reports highlighting new data or developments in the case.
