’Honour killing’ mother’s court outburst
21/10/2009   By Channel 4 News
The mother of alleged "honour killing" victim, Tulay Goren, faced her husband in court and asks him to explain her daughter’s disappearance.

Mehmet Goren denies murdering his 15-year-old daughter Tulay, who went missing 10 years ago. Today his wife told the Old Bailey she did not believe her husband when he told her Tulay had run away.

Arriving for her second day in the witness box, a wife giving evidence against her husband. Hanim Goren told the Old Bailey she believed her husband Mehmet was responsible for her daughter’s disappearance.

Tulay was last seen in January 1999. Her father and two uncles, Cuma and Ali are accused of murdering her because she was having a relationship with an older man.

Pausing during her evidence Mrs Goren swivelled round in her chair so she was facing her husband in the dock. Addressing him directly she said in a clear and determined voice: "Look at my face. What did you do to Tulay?"

She was stopped from continuing by the judge.

Mrs Goren explained how she had repeatedly confronted her husband after her daughter went missing, but he denied being involved.

Speaking through a Turkish interpreter she said when she threatened to go to the police he said he would tell them she and her relatives were responsible for Tulay’s disappearance.

At the family home, she said, photos of her daughter and her birth certificate were torn up and she was told not to mention her name again.

The court heard police had arrested Mrs Goren for perverting the course of justice and murder, but released her without charge.

Mrs Goren is due back in court tomorrow when she is expected to be cross examined.
