What do we do?

KWRW's general aims are to support and promote women's interests in the Kurdish communities in Kurdistan and in the diaspora. We are currently particularly interested in the following areas:

  • training, education and development work, to help women improve their employment and financial prospects. Economic independence is vital for women's rights. We are keen to encourage direct training for women, and also to work with institutions and employers to promote gender equality in the workplace. We have a wide range of contacts to help coordinate the provision of different types of training. See 'Our projects'.

  • counselling and support for women and families under stress. For many years Kurdistan has been the site of war, genocide and social dislocation of all kinds, and there are high levels of trauma and distress, compounded for women by the loss of male breadwinners. We are keen to develop programmes that will address these difficulties and help women to re-establish their lives. See 'Our projects'.

  • honour-based violence. Our work on honour-based violence is organised through KWAHK (Kurdish Women: Action against Honour Killing), which has been active since 2000 in this area. See the separate KWAHK section of this website for more information on this.

  • monitoring abuses of women's rights, through media reports, trial observations, etc. At present it is often difficult to assess the extent of violence against women, and honour-based violence is particularly likely to be concealed or misrepresented. We believe that it is crucial to build up a research base of evidence through reports in the Kurdish and non-Kurdish press. As we have members who speak Kurdish (Sorani and Kurmanji), Arabic, Turkish and Farsi as well as English, we are coordinating the development of an archive of reports to provide information on women's rights in general, and honour-based violence in particular, to be posted on the website as a permanent record.
